Bwindi Impenetrable & Kibale: 5-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Uganda and Transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

  • Arrival at Entebbe Airport
    Arrive at Entebbe International Airport. After clearing customs, meet your guide, who will take you to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, located about 8-9 hours from Entebbe by road. Enjoy the scenic drive, passing through lush landscapes, terraced hillsides, and rural villages.

Afternoon:

  • Lunch on the Way
    Stop for lunch at a recommended restaurant along the way before continuing your journey to Bwindi.

  • Arrival at Bwindi and Check-in
    Arrive in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, check into your lodge or camp, such as Silverback Lodge, Buhoma Lodge, or Gorilla Resort. These accommodations offer stunning views of the park and surrounding rainforest.

Evening:

  • Dinner and Relaxation
    Enjoy dinner at your lodge and unwind. You may have time to explore the lodge surroundings or simply relax in preparation for your exciting trekking adventure the next day.


Day 2: Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

Morning:

  • Early Breakfast and Briefing
    After an early breakfast, transfer to the Buhoma Park Headquarters (or another trekking entry point) for a briefing before the trek. You’ll meet your group and the guide, who will provide safety information and explain the trekking protocol.

  • Gorilla Trekking
    Start your gorilla trekking experience! The trek may take 1-6 hours depending on where the gorillas are located, but once you find the group, you’ll be allowed to spend one hour observing these incredible creatures in their natural environment. Watch them interact, play, and feed as you learn about their behavior, family structure, and conservation efforts.

Afternoon:

  • Return to Lodge for Lunch
    After the trek, return to your lodge for lunch and rest after the exciting morning.

  • Optional Cultural Visit or Nature Walk
    In the afternoon, you can visit the Batwa Cultural Experience. The Batwa are a semi-nomadic ethnic group that lived in the forest before it became a protected national park. You can learn about their traditions, forest skills, and lifestyle. Alternatively, you can enjoy a nature walk in the surrounding forest or visit the local community.

Evening:

  • Dinner and Relaxation
    Return to the lodge for dinner. Relax and share stories of your memorable encounter with the mountain gorillas.


Day 3: Transfer to Kibale National Park and Evening Nature Walk

Morning:

  • Breakfast and Departure for Kibale
    After breakfast, check out of your lodge and begin the journey to Kibale National Park, which takes about 4-5 hours by road. Enjoy the scenic drive through Uganda’s countryside, passing rolling hills, villages, and farmland.

Afternoon:

  • Arrival at Kibale and Check-in
    Arrive at your lodge near Kibale, such as Kyaninga Lodge, Primate Lodge Kibale, or Chimpanzee Forest Guesthouse. After checking in and having lunch, prepare for a relaxing afternoon.

  • Evening Nature Walk
    In the late afternoon, enjoy a nature walk along one of the trails in Kibale. This walk is perfect for spotting various species of primates and birds, and it offers a chance to learn about the forest ecosystem from an expert guide.

Evening:

  • Dinner and Relaxation
    Return to your lodge for a hearty dinner and a restful evening.


Day 4: Chimpanzee Trekking in Kibale Forest

Morning:

  • Early Breakfast and Briefing for Chimpanzee Trekking
    After an early breakfast, head to the Kibale Park Headquarters for a briefing on chimpanzee trekking. Kibale Forest is home to over 1,500 chimpanzees, and today you’ll set out to track one of the wild groups.

  • Chimpanzee Trekking
    Embark on your chimpanzee trek, which typically lasts 2-3 hours, depending on the location of the chimps. Once you find them, you’ll have an hour to watch them interact, feed, and play. You’ll gain valuable insights into their behavior, social structures, and conservation challenges.

Afternoon:

  • Lunch and Relaxation
    After the trek, return to your lodge for lunch and relaxation. Enjoy the tranquil atmosphere of the Kibale forest.

  • Optional Afternoon Activity
    In the afternoon, you can visit the Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary, a nearby birdwatching hotspot. Alternatively, take a walk through the village or simply enjoy the peaceful surroundings of the forest.

Day 5: Transfer Back to Kampala/Entebbe

Afternoon:

  • Arrival in Kampala/Entebbe

Day 2: Chimpanzee Tracking & Bigodi Wetland Walk

  • 6:30 AM – Breakfast & Transfer to Kibale Forest Headquarters
  • 8:00 AM – Chimpanzee Tracking Experience
    • Join a guided trek through the Kibale rainforest to track chimpanzees in their natural habitat. Along the way, spot other primates such as red colobus monkeys, black-and-white colobus monkeys, and L’Hoest’s monkeys.

Afternoon:

  • 2:00 PM – Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary Walk
    • Explore the Bigodi Wetland, home to over 8 primate species and incredible birdlife like the Great Blue Turaco.

Evening:

  • 6:30 PM – Return to the lodge for dinner and relaxation.

Day 3: Transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

Morning:

  • 7:00 AM – Depart for Bwindi National Park (5-6 hour drive)
    • Enjoy a scenic drive through the Ishasha sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park, famous for its tree-climbing lions.
  • Stop for lunch en route in Kihihi or Ishasha.

Afternoon:

  • 2:30 PM – Arrival & Check-in at Bwindi Lodge

    • Join expert guides on a 4-6 hour trek through the Bwindi rainforest to find a habituated gorilla family.
    • Spend one magical hour observing mountain gorillas in their natural habitat.
