A 1-Day Rhino Tracking Safari offers a rare opportunity to encounter endangered white rhinos on foot in their natural habitat. The experience takes place at the renowned Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, the only place in Uganda where wild rhinos can be tracked. Located approximately 180 kilometers north of Kampala, the sanctuary was established to reintroduce rhinos to Uganda after they became extinct in the wild due to poaching and civil unrest. Accompanied by experienced ranger guides, visitors track rhinos through savannah grasslands, learn about conservation efforts, and enjoy close-up wildlife encounters in a safe and controlled environment. This day trip is perfect for nature lovers, wildlife enthusiasts, photographers, and anyone seeking to complete the iconic African “Big Five” experience in Uganda.
Itinerary
In the morning after breakfast, a professional driver and guide will pick you from your hotel in the morning for your departure to the Ziwa rhino sanctuary, which is the only place in Uganda where the surviving rhinos are kept. You then arrive at the sanctuary; you will be briefed by the rangers about the dos and don’ts while on the rhino trek. It is important to give heed to the rangers’ instructions because the rhinos can become aggressive when they sense a need to defend themselves. The quest is normally done on foot with the help of an armed guide, before it’s too hot because high temperatures cause the creatures to retreat from feeding and walking through the park. Once you locate the rhinos, you have the opportunity to watch them for over an hour as they relate with each other and go about their daily business.
