Bwindi Impenetrable Forest & Queen Elizabeth National Park: 5-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival and Transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

Morning:

  • 7:00 AM – Departure from Kampala/Entebbe
    Start your journey from Kampala or Entebbe to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park. The drive takes approximately 8-9 hours, passing through scenic landscapes, rolling hills, and small villages.

  • 1:00 PM – Arrival and Check-in at Lodge
    Arrive at your accommodation, such as Silverback Lodge, Buhoma Lodge, or Gorilla Forest Camp, located in or near the park. Check in and relax while enjoying the picturesque surroundings of Bwindi.

Afternoon:

  • 2:30 PM – Optional Nature Walk or Cultural Experience
    After settling in, you can take a relaxing nature walk around the lodge or engage with the Batwa community to learn about their traditional way of life. The Batwa people, once forest dwellers, offer a unique cultural experience.

  • 6:00 PM – Dinner and Rest
    Return to your lodge for dinner and rest in preparation for the gorilla trekking adventure the next day.


Day 2: Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

Morning:

  • 6:00 AM – Early Breakfast and Transfer to Trekking Point
    After an early breakfast, depart for the park headquarters for a briefing on your gorilla trekking. You’ll be assigned to a group and paired with an experienced guide.

  • 8:00 AM – Gorilla Trekking Begins
    The trek into the forest can take anywhere from 1 to 6 hours, depending on the location of the gorillas. Once you find the gorilla family, you’ll spend an hour observing them as they interact, play, and go about their daily activities. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see mountain gorillas in the wild.

Afternoon:

  • 12:30 PM – Return to Lodge for Lunch
    After the trek, return to your lodge to relax and enjoy a delicious lunch. Reflect on the amazing experience of spending time with the gorillas.

  • 2:30 PM – Optional Nature Walk or Community Visit
    In the afternoon, take an optional nature walk to explore the surrounding area or visit a nearby community to learn more about local customs and life in the region.

  • 6:00 PM – Dinner and Relaxation
    Enjoy dinner at your lodge and rest for the evening.


Day 3: Transfer to Queen Elizabeth National Park

Morning:

  • 7:00 AM – Breakfast and Departure for Queen Elizabeth
    After breakfast, check out of your lodge and embark on a scenic drive to Queen Elizabeth National Park, which takes approximately 3-4 hours. Along the way, enjoy stunning views of the countryside, including rolling hills, small villages, and terraced farmlands.

  • 12:00 PM – Arrival at Queen Elizabeth National Park
    Upon arrival at Queen Elizabeth National Park, check in at your lodge or camp, such as Mweya Safari Lodge or Ishasha Wilderness Camp. Enjoy a warm welcome and settle in.

Afternoon:

  • 2:30 PM – Afternoon Game Drive
    Head out for an afternoon game drive in the park. This is a great time to spot elephants, buffaloes, antelope, and maybe even the elusive leopards. The diverse landscapes of the park, ranging from savannah to wetlands, create ideal conditions for abundant wildlife sightings.

  • 6:00 PM – Return to Lodge for Dinner
    After your game drive, return to your lodge for dinner and a peaceful evening amidst nature.


Day 4: Boat Safari on Kazinga Channel and Tree-Climbing Lions in Ishasha

Morning:

  • 6:00 AM – Breakfast
    After breakfast, head out for a boat safari on the Kazinga Channel, which connects Lake Edward and Lake George. The boat ride offers an incredible opportunity to see hippos, crocodiles, waterbirds, and elephants along the shores. The boat ride is one of the highlights of Queen Elizabeth National Park.

  • 9:00 AM – Return to Lodge for Refreshment
    After the boat ride, return to your lodge to relax and enjoy a light snack.

Afternoon:

  • 12:00 PM – Lunch at Lodge
    Enjoy a leisurely lunch at your lodge before heading out for more wildlife exploration.

  • 2:00 PM – Tree-Climbing Lions in Ishasha
    In the afternoon, take a scenic drive to the Ishasha sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park, famous for its tree-climbing lions. These unique lions are known for lounging in the branches of fig trees, providing fantastic photo opportunities. Keep an eye out for other wildlife in the area, including Ugandan kob and elephants.

  • 6:00 PM – Return to Lodge for Dinner
    Head back to your lodge for dinner and relax after a rewarding day of wildlife encounters.


Day 5: Departure and Return to Kampala/Entebbe

Morning:

  • 7:00 AM – Breakfast and Morning Game Drive
    Start your last day with an early morning game drive to spot more wildlife and enjoy the beauty of the park. This is another excellent chance to see lions, hyenas, and antelopes before your departure.

  • 9:00 AM – Return to Lodge and Check-out
    Return to your lodge for breakfast, check out, and prepare for your journey back to Kampala or Entebbe.

Afternoon:

  • 10:00 AM – Drive to Kampala/Entebbe
    Begin the drive back to Kampala or Entebbe, enjoying the beautiful Ugandan countryside on the way.

Day 2: Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi & Community Visit

  • 8:00 AM – Start Gorilla Trekking
    • Trek through dense jungle in search of a mountain gorilla family. Trekking can take 2-6 hours, depending on their location. Spend one magical hour observing them.

Afternoon:

  • 1:00 PM – Return to Lodge for Lunch & Relaxation
    • Enjoy the stunning rainforest views.

Evening:

  • 4:30 PM – Batwa Cultural Experience
    • Visit the indigenous Batwa pygmies and learn about their ancient forest survival skills.
  • 7:00 PM – Return to Lodge for Dinner & Overnight Stay.

Day 3: Transfer to Queen Elizabeth National Park via Ishasha

Morning:

  • 7:00 AM – Breakfast & Check-out
  • 8:00 AM – Drive to Queen Elizabeth National Park (4-5 hours)
  • 11:00 AM – Game Drive in Ishasha Sector
    • Search for the tree-climbing lions, as well as buffaloes, elephants, and antelopes.

Afternoon:

  • 3:00 PM – Continue to Northern Queen Elizabeth (Mweya Sector)

Evening:

  • 6:00 PM – Check-in at Lodge
    • Stay at Mweya Safari Lodge, Elephant Plains Lodge, or Pumba Safari Cottages.
  • 7:30 PM – Dinner & Relaxation.

Day 4: Game Drive & Kazinga Channel Boat Safari

Morning:

  • 6:30 AM – Early Game Drive in Kasenyi Plains
    • Spot lions, leopards, elephants, buffaloes, and antelopes.
  • 9:30 AM – Return to Lodge for Breakfast & Relaxation.

Afternoon:

  • 12:30 PM – Lunch at the Lodge.
  • 2:00 PM – Kazinga Channel Boat Safari
    • Enjoy a 2-hour cruise along the Kazinga Channel, spotting hippos, crocodiles, and diverse birdlife.

Evening:

  • 5:00 PM – Optional Visit to Katwe Salt Lake
    • Learn about traditional salt mining.
  • 7:00 PM – Return to Lodge for Dinner & Overnight.

Day 5: Optional Chimpanzee Trekking & Return to Kampala

Morning:

  • 6:30 AM – Optional Chimpanzee Trekking in Kyambura Gorge
    • Track chimpanzees in a dramatic rainforest valley.
  • 8:30 AM – Breakfast & Check-out

Afternoon:

  • 11:00 AM – Start Drive Back to Kampala/Entebbe
  • 1:00 PM – Lunch Stop in Mbarara.
